What Is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a device designed to replace a missing tooth and consists of two separate parts. The first is a metal screw that goes into your jaw. It is often made out of titanium. The second piece is a porcelain cap. The cap is designed to look like a tooth and can stand up to routine wear and tear. We will customize your porcelain cap to match your surrounding teeth, making it difficult to tell which tooth is real and which tooth is an implant.
With a dental implant, you should be able to eat the same diet you normally do. You simply need to take care of a dental implant like you take care of your other teeth.
Who Is a Candidate?
If you are missing one or more teeth, you may be a candidate for a dental implant. There are several criteria that you need to meet before you decide if this procedure is right for you. We must ensure that your mouth is healthy enough to support a dental implant. If you have been missing one or more teeth for a while, there is a chance your jawbone has weakened. Without a tooth to stimulate your jaw, your body may start to absorb the calcium from your jaw for other purposes.
We may need to use a bone graft to strengthen your jaw before the procedure. If your gum tissue is not strong enough to support an implant, we may need to give you a graft for that as well. We will look at your mouth closely to ensure you are a good candidate for a dental implant.
What Is the Procedure Like?
Once we have decided that this procedure is right for you, it typically moves forward in two parts. During the first part, we will place the screw in your jaw. We will give your jaw some time to graft to the screw. We will call you back in a few weeks to ensure the screw is firmly rooted in your mouth and that your jaw has accepted it.
Once we have confirmed that the screw is in place, we will screw the porcelain cap on top. We will also work with you to customize the shape, appearance, and color of the porcelain top to match your surrounding teeth. That way, we can give you the results you deserve.
